The Bubbler (Dane Reynolds Vox, Austyn Gillette lead, Warren Smith drums, Jon Frank bass and Tyge Lande on BV Hip Hop duties) is a freeform, free flowing, candid recording which takes the listener on a sordid journey into the seedy underworld of bubbling (drinking one’s own urine) a pastime made famous in (but not limited to) the Shire and it’s most infamous Rugby League star. But let’s not be side tracked… sidelined… suspended by the act itself.
Unpredictable and impulsive, this piece is an insightful soundtrack into the psyche of a bubbler. Austyn’s shambolic guitars have the perfect “box of Stanley Red” off-timing, similar to the workings of the Velvet’s Sterling Morrison, performed with suggestive stabs at the wild times ahead… the type that invariably lead to regret. Being a bass man, I’m proud to say Jon Frank gives this song its backbone, heart and swollen pee pee balls. It’s drunk but melodic, with a perfect combination of good times and wild nights thus leading once again to inevitable feelings of regret. Warren’s drums are as solid and impending as a urine drinking hangover (regret again!) Dane’s and Tyge’s vocals are as revealing as Todd Carney’s Instagram. They seem to egg each other on (unsure who will end up holding the camera?) and Tyge’s psychotic background vocals suggests the internal thought processes and motivation that would in all cases lead to the act of ingesting one’s urine with the result of course being nothing but and overwhelming tsunami of, you guessed it, regret. Or maybe not…
Since its origins the punk movement has suggested and gained notoriety from performing such acts… some arguably far worse. From Sabbath to the Cramps to GG Allin. So what happens when someone on the other end of the spectrum goes full circle? When a mainstream, corporate athlete does the old fashion Ouroboros (that ancient snakey thing that eats its own tail?) Well as our trusty no wave surfing punk pals have pointed out, it becomes a piss take.
In saying this, Bubbling (or associated defiant behaviour) should also be inside of all of us, a Yin and Yang of sorts, to balance against conformity and to challenge the norm. It should not be restricted to The Shire, but spread throughout the free world for all to enjoy. Futhermore, it’s quite effective against jellyfish stings. So you practice what you preach Warren… I really hope you do.
