Have you heard of Puerto Rican surfer Dylan Graves and his quest to ride the world’s strangest waves? It’s a thing that’s been happening in the upside down for some time and this latest episode features some of the most intense wedgies I’ve experienced since Year 7 at Mullumbimby High.   • SURFING WORLD’S 50 MOST INTERESTING: @lungislabb “I like to see how lightly I can walk on the sand, to leave the smallest footprint possible, “ Lungi tells me as we walk up the white sand beach he was born to. “How come?” I ask him, as I note his delicate walk and minimal print. “I dunno, I just like to do it. It’s fun.” “Do you reckon it helps your surfing? Being light on your feet?” “I dunno, I’ve never thought about it.” “Do you think your dancing helps your surfing?” “Yeah, I’d say it does.” Watching him surf and dance is like watching him walk the beach: subtle, yet precise. He’s like the nature around him; like the gannets and the dolphins, the fish, the seagulls and the white-breasted sea eagle, the wind and the waves. He moves amongst it with the ease of an evolved creature. There’s no awkwardness, just natural as nature is.   • SURFING WORLD’S 50 MOST INTERESTING: Luke Cederman For a satirist, modern surfing is, as they say, a target-rich environment. From woo-woo at Canggu to the World Surf League, surf culture has never had so many absurd corners. In fact, the only problem for the satirist is that modern surfing is sometimes soooo absurd you couldn’t possibly take the piss out of it better than it does itself. But for almost a decade, New Zealand’s Luke Cederman and his @raglansurfreport has gone there, skewering surf culture with mini-mockumentaries, Flight of the Conchords meets a Surfline cam. A former pro surfer himself, he’s made a career taking the piss out of pro surfers and everyday surf culture, saying more about surfing with a two-minute skit than a thousand Inertia articles could ever do.   • SURFING WORLD’S 50 MOST INTERESTING: Cliff Kapono In SW424 @jedaum_smith travelled to Hawaii’s Big Island to profile surfing academic @cliff_kapono who’s charting a new for course for Hawaiian kids through a blend of modern science and ancient culture… But it’s complicated. “There’s Dr Cliff and then there’s just Cliff,” he says, referring to his duelling personas. Dr Cliff is the avatar he’s curated to prosper in the politically correct, cookie cutter society of today. Dr Cliff is the eloquent professor you’ll see giving TED talks, or featured in the pages of the New York Times, on NBC or CBS. There is a lot riding on the success of Dr Cliff, but that is only part of who he is. ‘Just Cliff’ – as Cliff calls himself – is the Indigenous kid who grew up playing in crack dens, fighting off older Polynesian bullies, and knifing sketchy boog slabs pioneered by Mike Stewart, Spencer Skipper, and a long list of underground bodyboarders. ‘Just Cliff’ garnered respect in a rough, low-socioeconomic Indigenous community the old-fashioned way.   • SURFING WORLD’S 50 MOST INTERESTING: @surfwitchesboardriders “It’s funny, they’re not really that impressed by anything from the surf industry or surfing more widely,” says Dave Rastovich of the Surf Witches Boardriding Club, which includes his mum Yvonne amongst their membership. “They paddle out on big boards, wearing helmets and gloves and full body lycra. They don’t give a shit about fashion. They’ve got no filter either. At their age in life, they’ve got nothing to lose. They just want to ride waves, and that’s truer to the core of surfing than anything else, really.   • ‘Postcards From Motel Hell’ has just gone live and it’s raw and bleeding and might just be the best behind the scenes edit of a surf film ever cut. “Every single trip we did for this movie, there was an element of chaos – someone fucking snapped their leg, or someone almost died, or our car blew up and we got stranded somewhere,” recalls @harrybryant . “There’s so much of that kind of stuff that went on. Looking back at all these moments and the backstory to all of them, when shit hits the fan, that’s what you end up remembering.” Postcards From Motel Hell and the full long-read feature from SW422 is up live now on the Surfing World site.
  • ‘Crystal Sand’ just dropped online, another @torrenmartyn / @ishkaimagery / @needessentials diamond edit, this time featuring @deru_desu … who also appears in SW’s 50 MOST INTERESTING ISSUE. “Sometimes you get a sense Drew McPherson was summoned from the seventies to save the future. The blue denim and chambre shirt combo, the blonde mop and sideburns, the love of single-fins and throwback craft all create the visage. He was also living at Angourie for a few years, which really warped time around him.   • A little triumvirate of brilliance to stabilise your mood on a Wednesday afternoon. In SW424 we run the story of @dusty.rusty.tunes , a Lennox surfer who now lives in Koonya, Tassie where he surfs and makes music on a piano in the hallway. His story in the magazine is a brilliant piece written by Tassie surfing statesman, Mick Lawrence, who passed away earlier this year, shortly after it was penned. Finally, while staying down at the Koonya house while working on a film project, the horribly gifted @matty_hannon shot a one-take 7-minute film clip for Dusty’s song, ‘I’m in Love’. It’s low key brilliant, and for friends of Mick I’m sure they’ll be chuffed to see him again. The full 7-minute clip is up on the Surfing World site, along with Mick’s story, ‘Dusty Rusty’.
