A dream match made in indie music heaven, American Kurt Vile and Australian Courtney Barnett have teamed up to make an album that soaks in Australiana/Americana warm guitar licks and, quite simply, beautiful songwriting. Kurt Vile the former lead guitarist for The War on Drugs, and solo artist behind a bunch of records, most noticeably Wakin on a Pretty Daze and Believe I’m going down…. while Courtney Barnett is the solo singer songwriter out of Melbourne whose Sea of Split Peas double EP attracted international recognition while her follow up Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit elevated her into the realm of Australia’s greatest songwriters and made her an international star appearing on Ellen and Saturday Night Live. Together they’re wonderful, particularly their two lead singles, the guitar riff jangly heavy and winding back and forth “Over Everything” and the sweet and intimate friendship of “Continental Breakfast” are as good as anything they’ve ever made on their own. And the guitars picking over each other and voices going back and forth before coming together are warmer than a cat purring by an open fire. It’s rare for two guitar folk/rock musicians to collaborate on projects like this in the modern era, like the Travelling Wilburys or Crossby Stills Nash and Young did decades upon decades, but these two are the perfect candidates to do just that. It works so well, it’s hard to imagine how they haven’t been a duo this whole time. – milkrecords.com.au
