Have you ever considered that John John Florence’s talents might be completely overrated? He’s obviously okay at surfing, but maybe, just maybe, the real defining factor of his other worldly wave wizardry is all to do with his magic carpets? With the amount of hype around his boards and the man that makes them, the other Jon, the Pyzel one, this might not be a completely insane theory. One thing that’s for sure is that the man behind the boards, that have enabled the most hi-fi surfing that’s ever been done, deserves some recognition. FCS have today announced the winner of their inaugural FCS Legend Icon Award as Jon Pyzel.
From FCS:
“To qualify for the Icon category shapers needed to have 20 years of experience under their belt. And while the Legend Award was about honouring the past, this award is more about acknowledging what’s happening now, the shapers who’re innovating and leading board design into the future.
With so many shapers moving the needle, according to our judges; Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew, Tom Carroll and Brad Gerlach, the Icon Award was hotly contested and very difficult to decide. A lengthy deliberation ensued before they eventually settled on the worthy recipient.
It’s clear that Jon’s not only been well guided in his early years of shaping but has carved out a significant place in today’s competitive surfboard landscape resulting from an acute understanding of high-performance curves and shapes.”
This announcement follows Bob McTavish being awarded the Legend Award in the inaugural FCS Shaper awards a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations Jon and Bob, surfers the world over thank you for dedication in the foam dust.
