“This is so, so special, it’s unbelievable” said Steph Gilmore, who simultaneously covered her face with her hands, burst into tears and jumped up and down upon winning her seventh world title.
The emotional 7 x World Champ watched Lakey Peterson surf against Alana Blanchard, surrounded by a group of friends. Lakey needed to win to progress and attempt a shot at the World Title herself. With minutes remaining, she needed a 7.8 but couldn’t quite clinch it – meaning Steph had officially scored her seventh title and equalled Layne Beachley’s record.
Waiting until the buzzer had sounded, a shaking Steph repeated “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” before donning the yellow jersey and allowing herself to be hugged by her friends and family.
Steph now progresses in the competition, albeit with a ton of emotions and a big sigh of relief the next time she paddles out – and reeking of champagne thanks to some enthusiastic spraying. “The next heat will be interesting!” she laughed.
Thanking Layne Beachley for setting the standard, Steph’s voice broke as she dedicated the victory to the late Quiksilver chief Pierre Agnes and explained while she doesn’t always show her emotions and deeply competitive side outwardly, she really wanted the win.
NAILED IT Steph you style Lordess!
