It boggles the mind to think that a karate expert like Keanu Asing can win a WCT event against a World Champion (and previous event winner, no less) but still somehow receive the boot at year’s end on the World Championship Tour. However, this was the reality Keanu faced at the close of the 2016 season. Despite his startling conquest over Gabriel Medina at the Quiksilver Pro France, three months later Keanu was quietly asked to exit stage left, where he had no choice but to hop along WQS shin slappers for the amusement of his masters like some twisted hunger games sans Lenny Kravitz or his impossibly sunbleached ‘doo. And just when it looked like this Hawaiian giant killer might lose interest entirely and trade in his jersey for an orange single fin, he suddenly wins the Vans WQS at Virginia Beach, and backs it up with another victory at the Barbados Pro! But as luck would have it, his own backyard would play host to the ultimate decider, where the Hawaiian walked a higher plain to dodge the cuts and reclaim his rightful place among the world’s elite. Never discount the ways of the shinobi.
